Hi there! I'm April Davis dating coach and matchmaker at LUMASearch.com. Everyone seems to be doing online dating these days and some people seem to be better at it than others. Today we’re going to be discussing Tips for a great online profile.
1) Self promote!!
There’s a fine line between bragging and self-promoting, but don’t be afraid! If you’re awesome at something, make a fantastic paella, tackle black diamonds on your snowboard, or are successful at your job, don’t be afraid to say it!! Potential matches will be intrigued to see that you are able to promote yourself well and will like to see that you can shine. If you’re struggling to come up with something, ask a close friend or family member to help you – they’re your number one fans and will have plenty to brag about! If you’re not comfortable talking about your own positive attributes, get used to it!! A key part of those first few dates is being able to (humbly) talk about your strengths and what interests you.
2) Be playful and original
Potential matches have read “I like to go out with friends, but also enjoy a night in with a movie” more times than they care to count. A generic profile makes it hard to stand out from the crowd. Try telling a story; be original! What of your interests, past or future adventures is unique? Were you voted to have the best handstand in your yoga class? Are you the reigning Scrabble champion at your family gatherings? These types of fun facts make you more memorable and offer a chance to connect with a special someone who might challenge you to a Scrabble game or a handstand contest!
3) Be positive
Don’t focus on the negatives. This is not the place to be judgmental of yourself or others. We’ve all been hurt by liars, we’ve all been on bad dates, and we all have ex drama, but potential matches don’t want to hear about your major turnoffs or annoyances, etc. on the first impression. Coming across as picky or demanding is a great way to turn off potential matches. Stay positive and focus on what you are looking for.
4) Be realistic
If you aren’t a Kate Upton look-alike, don’t say you are, you don't have to be! If you’re out of shape, don’t pretend to be extremely athletic or you may find yourself wheezing and sweating on an active date. Lying about your height, curves, or profession won’t help you out once you’ve found someone you like and want to have a serious relationship with.
Be sure to have a variety of angles – show a close up of your face, and include a full body shot (doesn’t need to be in a swimsuit!) to demonstrate you aren’t trying to hide something. Showcase your interests through photos, for example, display how much you love your dog with a picture of you and your pup, demonstrate your love for the outdoors with a picture of you on the hiking trail, see it as an opportunity to tell a story with your photos.
